To make sure your final printed product looks exactly the way you intended, without any white edges or cut-off text, please follow these two simple rules when setting up your file:
1. Adding "Bleed" (Making the Background Bigger)
When we print, we use a machine to cut the paper down to the final size. To ensure your background color or image runs all the way to the edge without leaving an unsightly white line, you need to extend the background artwork past the final cut line. This extra area is called the Bleed.
- What to do: Add an extra 0.125 inches of background image/color to all four sides of your artwork.
- Example (2" x 3.5" Business Card):
- Final Product Size: $2'' x3.5''
- Your Artwork File Size (Including Bleed): $2.25'' x 3.75''
2. Setting a "Safety Margin" (Keeping Important Content Safe)
The cutting process is extremely precise, but to guarantee that no critical information (like phone numbers, logos, or text) is cut off, you need to keep it away from the edges.
- What to do: Keep all important text and design elements at least 0.125 inches inside the final product size.
- Example (2" x 3.5" Business Card):
- All essential content must be kept within an area of $1.75''x 3.25''$ (the final size minus $0.25''$ total from width and height).
